Whitening Agents

This is the procedure of making teeth whiter, and therefore more attractive. Our office encourages the passive tray-whitening method.

The tray method involves having impressions taken from which laboratory fabricated custom trays are made. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 30 minutes. The entire process takes 1-2 weeks of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however the higher the strength the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. Not all teeth respond to whitening treatments. Intrinsic staining (such as tetracycline stain) or any restorative aspects will not whiten. In these situations, veneers are more adept to achieving any esthetic goals.

The end results whether using trays at home or in-office treatments (ex. Zoom!) is the same. There is also usually less post-treatment sensitivity.

Pre and Post-Procedure Care

Prior to starting whitening treatments, it is advised to use a sensitivity toothpaste for 1-2 weeks leading up to whitening. This can help reduce any discomfort from whitening agents. In the weeks to follow whitening treatments, avoid foods and drinks that are sources of deep staining, as the “pores” of the teeth are vulnerable to picking up more stain.
